Synopsis
Since 2025, ReFuelEU Aviation has required fuel suppliers to include SAF in fuel supplied at EU airports, with obligations rising through 2030 and beyond. In 2025, uplift reached 2.79% against a 2% target, around 1.1 million tonnes, but not all of it was claimed. If your Emissions Monitoring Plan allows it, the SAF you uplifted in 2026 can reduce the emissions in your 2026 report.
SAF costs roughly three times more than conventional jet fuel. With the right documentation, you can use it to reduce your emissions under compliance schemes, claim EU ETS allowances and recover part of the premium.
The same uplift may be eligible under several schemes, but claiming it under the wrong scheme means lost value or double-claiming findings at verification. Supplier Proofs of Sustainability or Proofs of Compliance often arrive late or incomplete, and the burden of proof sits with the operator.
