Azzera’s CELESTE Platform Verified by Verifavia for 2024 Emissions Compliance

In a significant stride towards a more sustainable aviation industry, Azzera is proud to announce that our CELESTE platform has successfully completed an independent audit by Normec Verifavia for the second consecutive year. This achievement not only reinforces the robustness and reliability of CELESTE but also underscores our commitment to helping aviation operators navigate the complexities of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compliance programs.

Navigating the Complex Landscape of Emissions Compliance

The aviation industry is subject to an intricate web of environmental regulations aimed at reducing emissions. Operators must comply with various schemes such as the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS), the Swiss Emissions Trading System (CH ETS), and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Each of these frameworks has its own set of rules, monitoring requirements, and reporting obligations.

Recognizing the challenges this presents, Azzera developed CELESTE—a cutting-edge platform designed to simplify and streamline emissions management for aviation operators worldwide. CELESTE automatically segregates flights into the correct carbon compliance markets, accurately calculates emissions, highlights data gaps or inconsistencies and enables operators to export annual emissions compliance reports easily. This automation saves operators countless hours and reduces the risk of non-compliance.

“Our mission with CELESTE has always been to empower aviation operators with a tool that not only simplifies compliance but also provides actionable insights into their emissions,” says Puja Mahajan, CEO and Founder of Azzera. “The successful audit by Verifavia for the second year affirms that we are delivering on that mission.”

Normec Verifavia’s Seal of Approval

The audit of CELESTE was conducted in accordance with several key regulatory frameworks and international standards, including:

  • EU ETS: Regulation 601/2012 on the monitoring and reporting of GHG emissions.
  • CORSIA: International Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and the Environmental Technical Manual (ETM).
  • UK ETS: Greenhouse Gases Emissions Trading Scheme Order 2020 and the Monitoring and Reporting Regulation 2018.
  • CH ETS: Federal Act on the Reduction of CO₂ Emissions and the corresponding Ordinance.

In addition, the verification adhered to global standards such as ISO 14065:2020, ISO 14064-3:2019, and ISO 17029:2019, ensuring a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation of the platform.

The scope of Normec Verifavia’s verification was extensive, covering the platform’s functionality, data integrity, infrastructure, and database reliability. The audit confirmed that CELESTE accurately identifies whether flights fall under the regulatory scopes of EU ETS, UK ETS, CH ETS, or CORSIA.

One of the standout features of CELESTE is its proactive approach to data management. The platform identifies data gaps, such as missing flight legs or errors in fuel data, allowing users to address issues promptly. Furthermore, CELESTE is designed for continuous improvement, regularly updating its databases with new ICAO codes and incorporating amendments to existing regulations or newly introduced ones that affect scopes and calculation methods.

In their official opinion, Verifavia stated:

“NORMEC VERIFAVIA SAS conducted a verification of the greenhouse gas data calculated and analyzed for an airline’s obligations under various compliance schemes through the Azzera CELESTE Platform. On the basis of the verification work undertaken, these data are fairly stated.”

Beyond Compliance: A One-Stop Shop for Sustainability

CELESTE goes beyond mere compliance by serving as an integrated platform for all emissions-related activities. It connects data and insights directly with an online Book and Claim ledger for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) credits, ETS allowances, CORSIA credits, and voluntary carbon credits.

In addition, our Physical SAF inventory management module is designed to aid operators with new ReFuelEU monitoring and reportingrequirements. This holistic approach enables aviation operators to make informed decisions that align with regulatory requirements and broader sustainability goals.

“We believe that sustainability is not just about meeting regulatory obligations but also about making a positive impact on our planet,” Mahajan emphasizes. “By offering a one-stop shop for emissions management and access to carbon markets, CELESTE empowers operators to take meaningful steps toward reducing their environmental footprint.”
